Burgess-Manning Silencers

Burgess-Manning industrial silencers are used throughout the world to control the noise associated with a wide range of industrial processes. Our product offering includes:

  • Vent silencers
  • Blow-down silencers
  • Engine silencers
  • Blower intake silencers
  • Gas turbine silencers
  • Vacuum pump silencers
  • Centrifugal pump silencers
  • Rotary positive blower silencers
  • Centrifugal compressor silencers

Our current industrial silencer stock program includes standard designs for engine silencers, blower silencers, and compressor silencer applications as well as industrial separators/silencers for vacuum pump applications. We also offer custom silencer designs that can be tailored to meet the specific requirements of your application.

Burgess-Manning Industrial Silencers typically fall into the following categories:

  • Absorptive — High frequency noise applications.
  • Reactive — Low frequency noise applications.
  • Diffuser/Absorptive — Combines absorptive and reactive designs to cover a broader range of frequencies to improve overall performance.
  • Inhibitive — Pressure reduction applications typically encountered in vent or process piping systems.

In addition, Burgess-Manning offers products that combine silencing with other functions such as air filtration, liquid separation, pressure reduction and spark arresting. Our knowledgeable staff of experienced engineers will assist you in the selection and sizing of the product that is right for your application.

Dissipative "Absorptive" Silencer — Type LCA/ACA
Medium to high frequency noise reduction at low pressure drop for:

  • Suction and discharge for centrifugal compressors and blowers
  • Intakes and exhaust for gas turbines
  • Upstream and downstream of pressure reduction valves

Dissipative "Absorptive" Silencer

Used for applications that produce generally high frequency noise (i.e. centrifugal compressor). Attenuates noise using the “dissipative effect,” internal sections of acoustic pack material to absorb sound energy.

Design Parameters Performance
Noise Reduction <5dBA to >40dBA
Frequency Attention Best choice for medium and high frequencies

Reactive Silencer — Type BEO/BMA/BMI
Low to medium frequency noise reduction for:

  • Intake and exhaust of reciprocating engines
  • Discharge for rotary blowers and vacuum pumps
  • Exhaust for reciprocating engines in marine use

Reactive “Muffler” Silencer

Used for applications that produce generally low frequency noise (i.e. engine exhaust). Attenuates noise using the “snubbing principle,” multi-chambers and baffles to reflect sound energy upstream and cancel incoming sound waves.

Diffuser/Absorptive Silencer — Type SDA(with single or multiple diffusers)
Vent and blowdown of air, steam, and gas to atmosphere for:

  • Safety valves
  • Station and pipeline blowdown valves
  • Process control valves
  • Turbine, compressor and blower bypass
  • Boiler start-up purge systems
  • Switch valves

Diffuser/Absorptive Silencer

Used for applications that produce noise over a broad frequency range. Attenuates noise using a combination of chambers, baffle tubes and sound absorbing material to dissipate and snub sound energy.

Design Parameters Performance
Noise Reduction <5dBA to >35dBA
Frequency Attention Excellent for low frequencies

Inhibitive or Throttle Silencer - Type TH (with packed diffuser)
Vent and blowdown of air, steam and gas to atmosphere for:

  • Safety valves
  • Process control valves
  • Turbine, compressor and blower bypass
  • Boiler start-up purge systems
  • Switch valves

Inhibitive or Throttle Silencers

Generally used to prevent noise when venting high pressure gas or steam to atmosphere. The throttling device dissipates acoustic energy at the source, eliminating the need for bulky acoustic panels. This “advanced micro-diffusion” technology makes for a smaller and more effective silencer than would traditionally be required.

Design Parameters Performance
Noise Reduction <5dBA to >35dBA
Frequency Attention Excellent for low frequencies
