SELECTIVE CATALYTIC REDUCTION (SCR)

Peerless is the world leader in the design and supply of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems for a variety of applications including gas turbines (simple cycle and combined cycle), package boilers, process heaters, and other combustion processes. The basic premise behind an SCR system is to reduce the oxides of nitrogen (NOx) into nitrogen (N2) and water (H2O). This reaction is performed by injecting a reagent – ammonia (NH3) – into the exhaust gas and passing the stream through a catalyst. The major components of Peerless’ SCR systems are the ammonia flow control unit (AFCU) skid, the ammonia injection manifold and injection grid, the SCR catalyst modules and catalyst support structure, the reactor housing, and the control system.

The primary function of the ammonia flow control unit is to regulate the amount of reagent (ammonia) to the system, properly dilute the ammonia for injection into the system, and vaporize the ammonia if necessary. Peerless offers a variety of AFCU skids, depending upon the preferred type of agent – vapor anhydrous ammonia, liquid anhydrous ammonia, or an aqueous ammonia solution.

A Peerless ammonia injection system consists of two primary components: the ammonia injection manifold and the ammonia injection grid. The injection system provides an initial distribution of the diluted ammonia to the injection in a manner proportional to the NOx profile in the exhaust. The ammonia injection grid injects the diluted ammonia into the exhaust stream as the exhaust enters the SCR reactor.

The SCR catalyst is the component of the system that allows the NOx reduction chemical reaction(s) to occur within practical operating conditions. The majority of the SCR catalyst section consists of an array of rectangular modules designed to fit into a separate catalyst support structure. Each catalyst module contains elements of the catalyst material that actually influences the chemical reaction. The catalyst support structure is intended to support the catalyst modules and seal the perimeter space between the modules and the housing to prevent exhaust and ammonia bypass.

The SCR reactor housing is defined as the ductwork portion that contains the ammonia injection grid and SCR catalyst modules. The housing is designed to smoothly transition to and from the remaining ductwork surrounding the SCR reactor. Adequate instrumentation is included on the housing to assist in controlling and monitoring the SCR performance.

Peerless offers a couple of options regarding the control of the SCR system. Peerless can provide comprehensive control logic to allow the customer to fully integrate the SCR control into the facility’s control system. If remote control of the SCR system is desired, Peerless can provide a local control panel with comprehensive controls capabilities for the SCR.
